What BioCam Technologies does

BioCam Technologies is a technology development company with a strong focus on training and teaching. It builds lab automation, scientific software and visualisation for biology and engineering — turning manual protocols into reliable, reproducible workflows and the software around them.

Just as importantly, it teaches how that work is done — publishing articles and interactive tools on automation and biological engineering in the open, so the people running labs can understand and build the automation they depend on rather than treat it as a black box.

How BioCam can help

Lab automation & instrument control

Turn manual protocols into reliable automated workflows — liquid handling, robotic arms, sample prep and instrument control. I help labs adopt open-source automation frameworks such as PyLabRobot and connect them to their hardware, from firmware up to clean Python you can run yourself.

Scientific software & data

Python and Jupyter pipelines for image and data analysis, experiment design, and Bayesian optimisation (Design of Experiments) — reproducible, documented, and easy to trust.

Visualisation & interactive 3D

Make complex automation and biology easy to see — animation (Manim, Blender) and interactive, in-browser demonstrations that run smoothly on every browser and phone.

Full Stack Automator · Bioengineer · core developer of PyLabRobot

I work at the intersection of biology, hardware and software — getting laboratory robots and instruments to reliably do real science, and teaching how it all works in the open. I'm one of the core developers of PyLabRobot, an open-source Python framework for controlling lab devices, with 350+ contributions — mostly on the Hamilton STAR backend: 96-head pipetting, the iSWAP robotic arm, liquid-level detection and firmware integration, alongside the PyLabRobot community.

Background

I hold a PhD in synthetic biology from the University of Cambridge, where I built microfluidic devices and automation to study and engineer bacteria at single-cell resolution and high throughput. I work primarily in Python and care about lab systems that are reliable, reproducible and understandable — automation you can actually trust, not a black box.
